On April 11th, a delegation from Westarctica attended MicroCon 2015 in Anaheim, California. The conference was the first-ever North American gathering of unrecognized nations. As the first of its kind, the event drew massive interest from the international press, with the Associated Press running a story that was picked up by over 200 news and media outlets around the world.
MicroCon was an excellent opportunity for Grand Duke Travis to share the mission and history of Westarctica, as well as network with other leaders of unrecognized states. His Royal Highness gave a presentation titled “Micronations that Matter,” in which he extolled the many benefits of transitioning Westarctica to a nonprofit entity while encouraging others to find a way to devote their nations to a worthy cause.
Among the many representatives in attendance were President Baugh of Molossia, King Christopher of Vikesland, and Queen Carolyn of Ladonia. The Grand Duke was accompanied at the event by Westarctica’s Chief Technology Officer, Prince Dinny, the Marquis of Sarnoff, who was among the most resplendently dressed attendees in a striking gold Sherwani.
Following the conclusion of MicroCon, the august representatives gathered for a formal cotillion which featured dancing, dinner, and an awards ceremony. Grand Duke Travis invested seven new Knights in the Order of the Snowflake, and invested President Baugh as a Knight Commander. Following dinner, the Grand Duke also gave a touching toast recognizing President Baugh’s ongoing commitment to the larger community of unrecognized nations. The toast ended with the assembled parties cheering “ten thousand years to President Baugh!”
As a result of Westarctica’s participation in the MicroCon event, we successfully engaged our primary mission of educating the public about the steadily melting West Antarctic Ice Sheet, and with the resulting press attention, the Grand Duke has spread the voice of western Antarctica across the globe.
